Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created..."
Of course, this comes as no surprise to anyone who knows a little about God; he is the creator of everything in the universe:
In fact, these are the very first words of the Bible that begin the entire Bible and also first describe God:
Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
In fact, this was not only the beginning of the Bible but also all of reality. God began everything by creating everything in the universe
But what does creating actually mean?
Creation is defined as:
“Bringing something new into existence or making something new from other things.” [1]
Specifically, with God, creating was brining into existence the entire universe from nothing that seems to have existed before: The implications of that means that God created ever single atom out of literally nothing: with all its subatomic particles and the “atomic glue” that held it all together [4] in every single fabric of matter in the entire universe! He created all bonds with certain atoms to make certain elements [5] to form the creation: such as water and rock. From these atoms and molecules, he formed all matter such as planets, Stars, asteroids, and of course Earth.
The fact alone of making even a single physical thing from nothing is very VERY incredible power! Let alone making trillions of trillions of atoms to form all of material creation in the universe!
The Bible, however, does not say HOW God did this or how long it took but just states the simple fact that he did create all the universe someway somehow.
So, when we say God has the power of creation, we are really saying he has the power to make something from nothing: which is a very VERY incredible power!
However, God’s creating is more detailed on how and when it happens during the 6 creation days:
Genesis 1:3-13
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness he called ‘night.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault ‘sky.’ And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
And God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry ground ‘land,’ and the gathered waters he called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.’ And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day."
(The rest of creation week continues at Genesis 1:14-31)
We can note here that when God goes to create something he always speaks first then it either comes into reality all of a sudden or God makes it happen (like with the waters on day 2).
Psalm also says this is how God created everything: by a command
Psalm 148:5-6
“Let them [creation] praise the name of the Lord, for at his command they were created,….”
Psalm 33:6-7
“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.”
God not only made all of reality in the universe but also all life in it:
Psalm 146: 6
“[God] which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is…”
God gave life to all living beings (including humans):
Acts 17:25
“…he [God] himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.”
Everything that is living and alive in the universe (and possibly beyond) is because God gave them life! The reason you’re alive is because God choose to give you life!
So, considering all this God made everything: this means no other being created anything in the universe nor it seems has the power of creation like God does:
This includes the entire universe [space] (known as “the skies above” because this is what humans saw at night in the sky):
Psalm 19:1
“The skies[at day and especially at night] proclaim the work of his hands (He made them).”
Psalm 8:3
“When I consider your heavens[The sky at night], the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,…”
And of course, Planet Earth and everything on it:
Acts 17:24
“The God who made the world (Planet Earth) and everything in it,…”
Psalm 90:2
“…you brought forth the whole world,…”
Therefore, every single thing in the universe (and beyond) exists because of Him!
Colossians 1:16
“For in him [God] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him...”
And as Paul says Proclaiming through praise:
Romans 11:36
“For from him[God] …are all things.”
Every single thing in the universe exists because of God! That is very important to understand! The reason everything exists and even you is because of God.
For this reason, God is also called The Creator (Which means someone who makes something new [2]) because he created everything:
Colossians 3:9-10
“…Creator.”
All everything in the universe and beyond is called creation (Things that have been made by someone or something [3]) because everything had been created by God:
Romans 8:22
“…creation…”
Though God created everything, after creation week, God stopped officially creating directly as far as The Bible says, at least:
Hebrews 4:3
“…his works have been finished since the creation of the world.”
though he still plays a direct role in his creation by sustaining it: That is making sure it works properly like it should [6].
This is what Hebrews 1:3 says God has been doing since creation week ended and is doing now:
Hebrews 1:3
“…, sustaining all things by his powerful word [Command]…”
So even though God is done creating he is still playing a direct role in his creation by continually sustaining it.
But in what way is God sustaining his creation?
One major way God sustains his creation, is he has literally been holding all his creation together from coming undone:
As Colossians 1:17 says:
“…in him [God] all things hold together.”
The implications of this verse mean that God is literally responsible for the “atomic glue” that holds every single atom together [4] and every molecular bond [5] holding every molecule together. He has been holding every single atom out of the trillions and trillions of them in the entire universe ever since he created them until this very day; now that is truly very VERY incredible and unimaginable sustaining power!
God also “indirectly” sustains his creation in many other ways that we would consider “natural means”:
Like The Moon and Stars being kept in their “proper place”:
Psalm 8:3
“…the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,…”
God keeps the Moon and Stars in “their place” or what we would consider now: their proper rotation; with what we would consider natural means by the force of Gravity and other physical forces.
Like controlling precipitation (weather) on Earth:
Job 37:5-6
“God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
…
He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ ”
And controlling the movement of Earth to make the sun’s rays hit evenly on all sides of earth [The sun to rise in an earthy perspective]:
Matthew 5:45
“…your Father in heaven….causes his sun to rise…”
Though God officially stopped directly creating life on earth after creation week the Bible says he still is creating all new life on earth indirectly through what we would consider “natural reproductive means”:
For instance, God creates human beings indirectly every time a woman becomes pregnant after conception in her womb: thought they were not created directly like the first humans in creation week they are still created by God indirectly through “natural reproductive means”
As David says: God created him inside of his mother’s womb:
Psalm 139:13-16
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
…I was made in the secret place [His mom’s womb],
When I was woven together…”
Though it may not necessarily be considered “directly” and seems like a more natural process without seeing God work, according to this; all humans are created by God inside their mother’s womb upon conception in this natural process.
God says himself, that he created and formed all humans who are called by his name (in this case all Israelites [Humans]):
in Isaiah 43:7
“Everyone who is called by my name[Israelites],whom I created…, whom I formed and made.”
God even strongly hints himself that he also creates animals indirectly this way in the womb/egg of the mother when he talks about a behemoth (a large unidentified vegetarian animal) that he made along with Job [A human also made in his mother’s womb]:
Job 40:15
“Look at Behemoth[A large animal],which I made along with you…”
So, he created all natural things, but what about human creations and designs? Does God have anything to do with that?
Well, that is mentioned to, and yes, he says he also takes credit for human inventions as well:
Speaking of Humans inventions, God also formed indirectly one of the most “human” inventions ever: God made the human nations, set their boarders, and gave them their inheritance:
Acts 17:26
“he [God] made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,…”
This means that God deliberately made all nations of humanity: with their heritages, cultures, and identities this seemingly very human invention were also all creations of God.
Out of all the human nations he especially made Israel and takes special credit for this holy nation of his:
Isaiah 43:1
“…the Lord says—
‘he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:…’ ”
What about inventors like mechanics or artists who create their own creations? Did God have anything to do with that?
The Bible also says God takes credit for them too though this may seem strictly a human creativity and inventions.
God says he gives the talent, time, and knowhow for someone to become a blacksmith (a creator of weapons and metallic objects):
Isaiah 54:16-17
“See, it is I who created the blacksmith
who fans the coals into flame
and forges a weapon fit for its work….”
A blacksmith is a creator in its own right and God says he created the Creator of weapons!
God also makes Artisans and crafts people giving them the knowhow and creativity to be an artist’s/crafter though is also seems artist/crafts people are the sole creators of their talent: Like in this case with Moses where God deliberately chooses Israelite’s and supernaturally fills them with artistic power to make what he commanded Moses:
Exodus 31:1-6
“…I have chosen Bezalel …I have filled him with …wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab …to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you:…”
Though this was a special case, in general like the blacksmith, it can be safely assumed that God gives all artists and crafts people and all designers the creativity time and knowhow to create.
He Creates the Creators!
God is the great creator of all the universe, as we have seen he is solely responsible for everything in existence and still indirectly controls his creation to sustain it and make new life in ways that many would think to be ’natural means’ . We see God sustains his creation to such an extent that he even makes the creators by giving them time, creativity, knowhow, and knowledge of what to do.
Ultimately, God is the ultimate creator of all things; all creational power and knowledge of how it should act can all be traced back to him.
